New VAT Rate for Takeaway from April 1st 2026 (Sweden)

For the period April 1st 2026 to the end of December 2027, the VAT on food will be reduced from 12% to 6% in Sweden. For restaurants and cafés, this means that VAT must be lowered for food and beverage that customers purchase as takeaway.

This guide walks you through how to easily ensure that takeaway food & drinks are taxed at the lower VAT rate of 6%.

Update your VAT groups with a Takeaway VAT

  1. Sign in to BackOffice.
  2. Go to Company structure -> Finance -> VAT groups.
  3. Expand your 12% VAT group and select Sweden (if your company has multiple regencies).
  4. Next to the inhouse VAT rate field, select a Takeaway VAT rate of 6%.

When selling articles with takeaway

When you sell articles included in the 12% VAT group at checkout with takeaway, the lower VAT rate of 6% is automatically activated.
