Set up product groups
Product groups help you organise your articles in BackOffice and ensure they are set up correctly for tax reporting and POS operations. Every article must be connected to a product group because VAT, product group type, and other settings are defined at the group level.
While you could create one product group per VAT rate, we recommend using descriptive, structured product groups (for example Coffee & Tea, Beer, or Snacks). Clear grouping makes it easier to search, manage, and report on your articles later—especially as your catalogue grows.
In this guide, we’ll walk through how to create a new product group for hot drinks, such as coffee and tea.
Add new product group
- Sign in to BackOffice.
- Select Articles in the main menu and go to Product groups. Click New product group.

- Complete the settings in the dialog:
- Name: give the product group a name (i.e. Other drinks)
- VAT rate: choose a VAT rate (i.e. 12%)
- Type: for tax compliance requirements, select a suitable product group type from the list (i.e. Other drinks (tea, coffee etc)).
- External ID: optional to use, for example when using an external integration

- Save your changes.
